Why Pearls?

“Pearls are Always Appropriate”

- Jackie Kennedy -

I knew when I named my business that I would get asked at some point why I choose Pearl Home Designs, but I didn’t anticipate it on the first day. I should have expected it and had this post ready to go when I launched the page, as I probably would have been the first to ask another person. So here you go, this is my answer….

When I was thinking of a business name, I kept coming back to my roots and thinking of my Grandma Marjorie. I have her name as my middle name, and I love it. I used to think it was so old fashioned and not youthful, but as I have aged I realize that it is really classic and beautiful. Her name means “Pearl” which is one of the first reasons that I thought of it. Then as I was pondering what a pearl is, and what it stood for I really became heavily desired that I should use this to name my business.

Pearls start with a tiny grain of sand, that is a painful irritant that bothers and scratches the oyster. Because an oyster can not get rid of this irritant alone, it starts building a coating around it which encases the sand and becomes something totally beautiful and unique to each one. Building, remodeling, and decorating are so much like this. Something is bothering or creating an irritant so much so that people have a desire to fix it or polish it up.

Another reason pearls are so embedded into my design business is that they are unique and hard to come by. Not every oyster will contain a pearl. They are a treasure found deep in the ocean. One that requires diving, sacrifice from the oyster, and then almost magically a classic round sphere is unearthed. Not everyone will have the ability, desire, or grit to utilize design in their lives. But those who do, will discover that with some sort of ugliness or irritation, can come a beautiful classic pearl that never goes out of style.

So in a nutshell, or should I say oyster shell. :) Here is my answer.

Heritage, Classic, Grit, Polish, Unique, Shiny
